Manolo Valdés
Opera Gallery Houston presents 'Manolo Valdés', a major exhibition dedicated to the celebrated Spanish artist. Bringing together a significant selection of works, the exhibition offers insight into the breadth of the artist’s practice and his sustained engagement with art history.
A Dialogue with Art History
For more than six decades, Valdés has developed a practice that is at once deeply rooted in the history of art and unmistakably his own. Rather than revisiting the past as a fixed canon, he approaches it as a living source of ideas, continually reinterpreting familiar images through new materials, forms, and ways of seeing. His work does not replicate historical references; instead, it transforms them. By reimagining iconic imagery, Valdés opens a dialogue between past and present, allowing tradition to evolve through contemporary expression.
A Language of Variation and Reinvention
This exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works that demonstrate the remarkable breadth of Valdés’s artistic language. Across celebrated series such as Reina Mariana, Infanta Margarita, Cabezas, and Librería, recurring motifs evolve through variation, revealing how a single image can generate an endless succession of possibilities. For Valdés, revisiting an image is never an act of repetition—it is an opportunity to deepen its meaning. Each return introduces a new perspective, material, and formal approach, forming part of an ongoing visual conversation that unfolds over time.
Highlights of the Exhibition
Among the highlights is Jackie (2017), a richly layered mixed-media portrait that exemplifies the artist’s ability to transform historical and cultural references into contemporary compositions. Through collage, texture, and an expressive surface, the work captures both presence and memory. In parallel, the exhibition features a monumental sculpture from the Librería series, where the form of a bookshelf becomes both an architectural structure and a meditation on memory and knowledge. Inspired by a lifelong relationship with books, these works reflect the idea that every encounter with an image or text is shaped by time and experience, acquiring new meanings with each return.
Material as Meaning
Throughout the exhibition, Valdés’s fascination with material experimentation is ever-present. Wood, bronze, aluminum, crystalline resin, alabaster, Murano glass, burlap, and paint are not merely mediums but active participants in the creative process, each carrying its own history and expressive potential. Whether in luminous sculptural busts adorned with vibrant headdresses or in the commanding presence of his iconic Infanta figures, material and image interact to create works of striking texture, scale, and presence.
A Continuous Transformation
It is this continual process of transformation that defines Valdés’s work and gives it enduring resonance. His art reminds us that history is never static; it is constantly renewed through interpretation. Each work carries echoes of those that came before while opening new possibilities for the future.
Through this exhibition, Manolo Valdés invites viewers to engage in a dynamic exchange between memory and invention, where the past is not simply preserved, but reimagined.
